Youth soccer teams win world titles

The 3v3 World Cup III, a tournament featuring three-person soccer teams, recently was held in Mooresville, and a pair youth soccer teams from Union County left with world championships.
The boys team, the “Red M&Ms” of the Porter Ridge Athletic Association, won the Under 9 Silver classification. The Red M&Ms, whose roster featured Nick Slape, Stanley Pitera, Blake Harold, Brandon Reynolds, Ethan Helms, Jacob Windeknecht, Aaden Stamper and coach Stan Pitera, earned a trip to the tournament after placing second at the 3v3 World Tour NC State Cup in Charlotte in June.
At the world cup competition, the Red M&Ms were 7-0. They began the tournament with an 8-2 win over South Carolina’s DSC U9 White, followed by a 5-4 win over the SISA Lakers (N.C.) and a 6-1 victory over ICFC 03 (S.C.).
The next day, they defeated DSC U9 White (by a 6-3 score), the SISA Lakers (6-5) and ICFC 03 (7-4). The Red M&Ms again faced ICFC 03 in the finals and won, 2-1.
The girls team, playing in the Under 10 Gold & Silver division, advanced to the silver bracket championship despite having to overcome a pair of losses in the opening round.
After notching convincing victories over DSC 02 (9-1) and South Carolina’s Whiplash (9-4), the Galaxy Girls fell to North Carolina’s Hot Tamales (12-1) and the Cabarrus Elite (3-1). The Union County team rebounded the following day and picked up three wins, downing the SISA Impact 3 (4-3), the DSC 02 (5-1) and SISA Impact 3 once again (11-2) for the Silver Division title.
The Galaxy Girls, who won the 3v3 World Tour NC State Cup in July, were paced by Madison Reynolds, Mya Manavanh, Ashley Wright, Camryn Toft, Noelle Erickson, Ellie Perlungher and Nicole Cristy.
