Waxhaw golfer Varol qualifies for U.S. Amateur

John Varol

John Varol, a Waxhaw native and rising junior at Wake Forest University, recently qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, the country’s most prestigious golf tournament for non-professionals.

Varol qualified after firing rounds of 71 and 74 to finish with a score of 145, placing him third at the United States Golf Association’s U.S. Amateur qualifying event in Bluffton, S.C., on July 17. The top five finishers earned a spot in the U.S. Amateur.

Qualifying for the U.S. Amateur capped an impressive summer by the Demon Deacon. Varol, a 2010 graduate of Matthews’ Covenant Day School, tied for third at the Southeastern Amateur in June, followed by a 10th-place finish at the Carolinas Amateur, which was held at Charlotte Country Club. Varol also tied for third at the Carolina Amateur at Providence Country Club on July 29.

The U.S. Amateur takes place Aug. 13-19 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado.
