Cavs’ Mitchell receives website’s All-American nod
Cuthbertson sophomore Shelton Mitchell already had collected a host of honors from his play during the 2011-12 basketball season, including player of the year awards from Union County Weekly and the Rocky River 1A/2A conference.
On April 18, the 6-foot-3 point guard received even more recognition, as he was named to Maxpreps.com’s 2011-12 Sophomore All-American team.
Mitchell was named to the highly regarded website’s honorable-mention team after averaging 23.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game for the Cavs, who finished the season with a 31-2 record and advanced to the Class 2A championship game.
Mitchell currently has scholarship offers from Missouri, Wake Forest, South Carolina, Mississippi State and the Charlotte 49ers.
Sun Valley standouts sign with colleges
The college search has finally come to an end for a trio of Sun Valley boys basketball players as Spartan seniors Shaun Stewart, Jalen Withspoon and Tevin Graham each signed National Letters of Intent recently.
Stewart, who was named last year’s Union County Weekly Boys Basketball Player of the Year, signed with Greensboro’s N.C. A&T State University. Stewart averaged 26.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game this season for the Spartans, who finished the season with a 22-5 record and won the Southern Carolina 3A/4A conference’s regular-season and tournament titles. Stewart also was named to the N.C. Coaches Association’s District 9 first team.
Witherspoon, who, along with Stewart, was a four-year starter, chose to continue his career at Mar Hill College. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard averaged 18 points, 6.5 rebounds and four assists for the Spartans this season and was named to the District 9 third team.
Graham, who averaged 10 points per game for the Spartans, inked with Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst. Sandhills won the 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association national championship. Graham joined Stewart and Witherspoon on the 2012 Southern Carolina 3A/4A all-conference team this past season.
