Former Cav baseball star Morrison off to hot start

Former Cuthbertson High School baseball star and current Texas Christian University freshman Preston Morrison was named the Mountain West Conference’s Pitcher of the Week last week after earning the Horned Frogs’ first win of the season, a 5-2 decision over No. 22 Mississippi on Feb. 19.

Morrison entered the game in the fifth inning with two runners on base and the game knotted at 2. Morrison retired the next 10 batters he faced to earn the win. Morrison also earned a win in relief over Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 24.

Texas Christian currently is ranked 15th in the nation.

East Union Middle School’s Tucker shines

On Feb. 19, Drew Tucker, a seventh-grader at East Union Middle School, tallied three top-10 finishes at the North Carolina Swimming 14 & Under Age Group Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Tucker’s highest finish was sixth in the 50-meter freestyle, which he completed in 25.27 seconds.

In all, Tucker qualified in five events: the 100 butterfly, the 100 freestyle, the 50 butterfly, the 50 freestyle and the 50 backstroke. Aside from the 50 freestyle, Tucker advanced to the finals and finished 10th in both the 50 butterfly and the 50 backstroke.

Thanks to his performance a few weeks ago, Tucker qualified in all five events for this month’s Eastern Section Southern Zone Age Group Championships in Greensboro, where he will compete against swimmers from Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia.
