Cavs’ Karas wins state singles title
Even a steady, soaking rain and a change of venue couldn’t dampen Kalli Karas’ day as the Cuthbertson junior won the 2011 Class 2A state individual girls tennis title, Oct. 30 at N.C. State University.
Karas downed Salisbury’s Katelyn Storey, last year’s runner-up, in straight sets by scores of 6-3, 6-4 to win the title.
Karas began the competition at the Cary Tennis Center on Oct. 29. She opened the tournament with a first-round win over Burnsville Mountain Heritage’s Penny Lane Buckner, 6-1, 6-0. Following the opening round, inclement weather forced tournament organizers to move the event to N.C. State’s J.W. Isenhour Indoor Tennis Center.
Karas then blanked Topsail’s Danielle McGee (6-0, 6-0) to advance to the semifinals, where Karas then downed Catawba Bandys’ Carson Shell, 7-5, 6-2.
The title was Karas’ third. She was a member of Cuthbertson’s championship doubles teams in 2009 and 2010. Karas also earned Player of the Year honors for the Rocky River 1A/2A conference this season while her coach, Wendy Medlin, was named Coach of the Year.
