@S McKnight If it expired we would still be serviced by the Union County Sheriff’s, but we wont have dedicated officers for Indian trail. So when the neighborhood thug is breaking into you car, garage and you dial 911, the closest officer might be coming from Monroe

A great concept to have no designated law enforcement officers for a town with a population of 35,000. Instead , we can wait for a deputy to respond to anywhere in Indian Trail from the other side of Union County if he or she are the only available deputy at the time. If the contract expires the deputies would be reassigned elsewhere in the county since there is no deputy work station for them to work out of in Indian Trail once it has closed. Can Indian Trail afford their own police department with the current tax base? Would Indian Trail be able to have the same amount of officers we have now for the price of the current contract? We can use the money saved by not renewing the contract to buy Christmas decorations for the town since there are few, if any or for some other important purchases. I am sure all of us can come up with more options to spend that money on other than for law enforcement.

With a little research, S. Mc Night could answer his own question. Using his logic here is a question: Why don’t all towns disband their police departments and just let the Sheriff’s Office patrol their towns as they do the unincorporated parts of Union County? Wouldn’t the towns save a lot of money?

Why do we need a contract with the Sheriff anyway? Isn’t their job to patrol the town and the rest of the county? What happens if the town just lets the contract expire? Do the deputies just stop working?
