‘Cash Mob’ looking at Indian Trail

Aug. 4 event to first help Matthews businesses

If you’ve ever seen a flash mob, you might understand the idea behind RelyLocal’s “Cash Mob” event Saturday, Aug. 4, in Matthews.

A flash mob is an event where a mass of people invade a public space in order to make a scene. The grassroots marketing campaign RelyLocal is now applying that strategy to its “Cash Mob” events.

Residents are invited to show up in front of Wags to Whiskers in the Matthews Festival Shopping Center at 1 p.m. Saturday to join the mob.

“It’s to give the local pet supply store a bit of economic stimulus,” Nancy Bradley, community relations director for RelyLocal, said.

RelyLocal is asking residents to show up at the store and spend at least $20 there “instead of buying online or at the big-box chains,” Bradley said. “Even if you don’t own a pet, consider buying pet supplies to donate to the local humane society or Cat Rescue Coalition.”

Bradley said the Cash Mob is a part of RelyLocal’s Shift $20 movement, asking residents to refocus at least $20 of normal spending to support local businesses.

Carolina Premier Bank, Fast Frame Matthews, Backyard Wild and other local businesses will showcase their support by donating items for giveaways and providing special offers to the first 25 people who show up to the event, Bradley said.

Participants also are invited to an after-party following the Cash Mob at Dilworth Coffee in downtown Matthews.

Bradley said that Cash Mobs will likely become a monthly event for RelyLocal as part of a call-to-action effort to rebuild the local economy.

“They are already seeking out local businesses for the next Cash Mob to hit in Indian Trail and Mint Hill,” she said.

Bradley said Cash Mobs have been sweeping across the country in an effort to revive local economies.

“These events not only support local businesses, but they are fun and create excitement in bringing people together to build a greater sense of community,” she said.
