STALLINGS – The North Carolina Department of Transportation says there’s been at least 17 wrecks at the intersection of Stevens Mill Road and Stallings Road since 2008.
The intersection is getting changed to a four-way stop. The conversion is scheduled for Aug. 1, weather permitting. Currently, traffic on Stevens Mill Road is required to stop while traffic on Stallings Road can travel through without stopping. State transportation officials hope the change improves safety and minimizes delays on the two streets. Message boards will go up at the intersection prior to work starting.
There were 17 reported wrecks at the intersection between Jan. 1, 2008, and May 31, 2012, according to the transportation department. None of the wrecks were fatal.
Three of the wrecks involved excessive speed, while all the rest were in situations where drivers were going 45 miles per hour or slower.
