Infant found inside raided meth lab, deputies say

INDIAN TRAIL – Union County Sheriff’s deputies found a 1-year-old girl inside a home they say was a working meth lab.

Deputies raided the 15216 Catawba Circle South home on March 23 after getting tips about suspicious chemical purchases from local business owners. They found the baby’s mother, Teri Kuhns Whitmore, 27, actively making the drugs once deputies got inside. The baby was in the room where the noxious chemicals were being produced, deputies said in a press release.

The baby was taken away by social services.

Whitmore and Ryan Adian Russell, 34, were charged with two counts of manufacturing methamphetamines, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver methamphetamines, possession of precursor chemicals, possession of drug paraphernalia and felony child abuse, deputies said.

The couple was being held on a $500,000 bond at the Union County Jail. They will appear in court April 24.

Pilot identified in fatal Waxhaw plane crash

WAXHAW – Union County Sheriff’s deputies identified Dwight Bradley Vanzanen as the pilot who died last week while trying to land his amateur-built plane at the JAARS landing strip.

Vanzanen, of Washington state, crash landed Monday, March 26, at about 2:30 p.m. near the JAARS-Townsend Airport. The cause of the crash is unknown. Vanzanen was the only person on board.

A spokesperson for JAARS, a Bible translation non-profit that operates the small airstrip, said Vanzanen was not connected to the organization.

The cause of the AVID FLYER MK4 crash is being investigated.

Masked man robs beauty salon

MONROE – A robber put a weapon to a man’s head last week after bursting into a Monroe beauty salon.

Employees of the Fabiolas Beauty Salon, at 1212 N. Charlotte Ave., said a man dressed in all black, wearing something over his face came into the store at about 7 p.m. March 24. He placed a “hand held weapon” to a customer’s head and demanded everyone hand over their cash, a police report said.

After getting everyone’s money, the robber demanded cash from the register before snatching a woman’s purse and running away down Spring Street, the report said.

Anyone with any information on this robbery can call Union County Crime Stoppers at 704-283-5600.
