Wesley Chapel mayor runs unopposed

Hopes to see projects come to fruition during second term

Wesley Chapel Mayor Brad Horvath may be running unopposed, but by no means does that mean he’s planning on taking it easy this time around. “We have two major projects in the works that the Council has approved – our town hall and our park,” Horvath said. “I want to see those come to fruition.”

The town recently purchased part of the land for the park and is interviewing an engineering and a design firm to begin work on the Town Hall. Both projects are in keeping with Horvath’s inaugural campaign promise to implement sections of the town’s Master Plan. “Both are using most of town’s resources without going into debt,” Horvath said. “I’m very proud of that fact.”

Also on the docket for a second term? A Contract Deputy, similar to those seen in Weddington and other Union County towns. “The council just approved this,” Horvath said, explaining the Council hopefully will have a deputy join the town’s ranks by early 2012.

On his way to a MUMPO meeting during this interview, it’s clear Horvath remains true to a second first election campaign pledge—that included working with NCDOT and MUMPO to follow a Local Area Regional Transportation Plan developed in partnership with Weddington, Waxhaw and Marvin. “I am a realist in understanding that the NCDOT is constrained like everyone else in this economy,” Horvath explained. “The fact that MUMPO has added the widening of key roads in our plan is a step in the right direction.”

In wrapping up the town’s Heritage Festival earlier this month, Horvath can check off a third campaign pledge to help establish the Village’s identity. “We had a great turnout,” he exclaimed, which kicked off with the 5K “Race Away Autism,” and featured the Cuthbertson High School marching band, the Carolina Clowns and the Shea Rose Vaulters from Marvin. Also honored at this year’s festival was education long-time education devotee and recently retired Wesley Chapel Elementary School Principal Rosanne Bateman.
