INDIAN TRAIL — Third-graders at Porter Ridge Elementary School headed outside recently to make some compost bags and study soil.

The students have been studying soil and plants this year, and used the project to identify components of soil and experiment with different types, seeing what effects the soil has on plant growth. Using their compost bags, students watched to see changes in the soil as it broke down and turned into something they could use to help their vegetable seeds grow.

Later, students used what they learned to write about plants and soil before enjoying a “compost bucket” cake.
